Consumer Products Company: Validating a New Product Before Building It

Professionals working from home were struggling with tools that weren’t built for how they now worked. Before committing to build anything, the client needed real proof the opportunity was worth pursuing.

Client

A major consumer products company and household name. Specific details are withheld due to confidentiality.

Challenge

In early 2021, the client suspected professionals working in the new hybrid and work-from-home reality lacked the right tools to do their jobs well, but they needed real evidence, not a guess, to justify committing resources and rallying internal support before building anything.

Solution

We ran a structured research process to test the client’s hypothesis with real people. We started by talking directly to professionals across the US who matched the client’s target audience, learning firsthand where their tools were falling short. Once the evidence supported a real opportunity, we ran a workshop with people from across the client’s business to generate possible solutions, then narrowed those ideas down and tested them with the same target audience using simple prototypes. Finally, we built higher-fidelity prototypes, combining hardware and software, and tested them in person to confirm the solution actually worked, that people wanted it, that it could realistically be built, and that it made business sense.

Results

Evidence Strong Enough to Move Forward.

The client walked away with real, customer-validated evidence that their proposed solution addressed a genuine need, could be built with existing technology, and had a viable business case, enough to secure organizational support and move the product onto their roadmap.

Technical Details

Used the Design Thinking framework across three phases: discovery research, concept generation, and prototype validation. Combined remote interviews, an internal co-creation workshop, low-fidelity prototypes, and in-person testing of a combined hardware-and-software prototype at A-CX’s Vancouver studio, evaluated against desirability, feasibility, and viability.
