Google: Bringing Spatial Audio to REAPER and Adobe Premiere Pro

A plugin built for one editing tool needed to work in two more, each with its own technical rules, before it could go out to the public. That was the next step for Google’s Eclipsa Audio.

Client

Google built Eclipsa Audio, a spatial audio technology, and had already released an early version of a plugin for one professional editing tool, Avid Pro Tools. The next step was reaching more creators by bringing that same capability to two more widely used tools: REAPER and Adobe Premiere Pro. This work continues the plugin’s original build, covered in an earlier case study.

Challenge

Each editing tool has its own technical rules for how a plugin behaves, so the same plugin couldn’t simply be copied over, it needed real changes to work correctly in each one. Google also needed a better way to release new versions and collect feedback, since the existing process of manually sending installers and gathering comments by hand couldn’t support a public launch.

Solution

We adapted the plugin to work correctly in both REAPER and Adobe Premiere Pro, solving format-specific issues along the way so audio played, exported, and routed correctly in each tool.

We also built a public website where creators could download the plugin and leave feedback, and where Google could see which versions were actually being used. Behind the scenes, we automated the process of building, signing, and releasing new versions, replacing a slow manual process with one ready for a public release.

Results

Two More Tools, One Public Launch.

The plugin now works in REAPER and Adobe Premiere Pro, alongside the tool it originally supported. Google released it to the public, with a system in place to track usage and gather feedback for future updates.

Technical Details

Ported the original AAX plugin to VST3 for REAPER and AU for Adobe Premiere Pro using JUCE, resolving format-specific issues in export notifications, multichannel bus negotiation, and plugin reinitialization during export.

Automated build, signing, and notarization using self-hosted GitHub runners to support macOS code-signing requirements involving a physical USB signing key. Built a WordPress-based distribution site with Azure Blob Storage and Front Door for hosting, and Google Analytics and HubSpot for usage tracking and feedback.

Try It Yourself

Eclipsa Audio plugins are available now. Download them and try them in REAPER or Adobe Premiere Pro, or watch a quick walkthrough or tips for exporting from Premiere Pro.
